This is a time for solidarity

I’m posting this after seeing the post about that University teacher who got fired. Please bare with me and try to weigh in everything I’ll say.

First of all, about racism. Yes it’s something we should condemn. But we should condemn every form of racism. I’ve seen many people quite happy to relay the narrative that consists on smearing North Africans as being ontologically racists. You know what we call someone who thinks that a race is ontologically something: racism. So you, when smearing all North Africans or Moroccans and labeling them as racists means that you’re no better than the ones you condemn.
Every country has its racists, including black people. So stop going on other subs claiming how we North Africans are just a bunch of racists, just to inflate your ego. You’re actually making a fool of yourself.

Now on firing that teacher. In a moment of frustration she wrote what she wrote. What she said is bad. We all agree. But is firing her the best solution? Especially when she’s been victim of a harassment campaign from non Moroccans to ruin her career and life? She should be held accountable for what she said, but firing her is not a proportionate response. The University is acting on the fact that it wants to preserve its image, or just blindly copying cancel culture.
Why is firing her a stupid move? First, everyone makes mistakes and should be heard and given a chance to repent.

Second, firing based on a opinion she expressed in a social network that doesn’t have anything to do with her work cannot be labeled as a professional mistake. Otherwise, if your employer can fire you based on your opinions, then they should start including a morality test in their interviews. Imagine that. Going to a job interview and having to prove, not just by words but with concrete proof, that you fit into a moral mold. Imagine the consequences of such a culture.

Third, all of us make mistakes. Me, you, everyone, we all had a moment in our lives, even for a split second, a moment when we had a morally questionable thought. Who are we to condemn in such a disproportionate way someone who did that once in her life?

Fourth, we live in Morocco. It’s not like this teacher can just easily find another job. Morocco is a precarious country in many ways. Which is why blindly importing cancel culture in our country makes even less sense.

On the other hand, in this tough time, where everyone is smearing use left and right, we should show some solidarity to our fellow citizens. We should hold that woman accountable, but we should give her another chance.

My suggestion is that we should make our voice heard and ask that University to reconsider its decision. Maybe suspend her for a few months or something that will make her reflect on what she said.

I hope we can use some empathy, common sense, and solidarity in this discussion, and avoid sophism as much as possible.
